8월 15일 금요일은 한국에서도 공식 공휴일(독립기념일)입니다. 연휴로 인해 상하이행 비행기가 출발하는 인천공항은 이른 아침부터 매우 분주했습니다. 상하이에서 버셀레-라가 상하이 지사 동료들이 우리를 맞이했습니다. 함께 지하철을 타고 상하이에 있는 초대형 기차역으로 이동했습니다. 맛있는 소고기 수프로 식사를 대신한 후, 허난성 동쪽으로가는 고속열차를 탔습니다. 거의 3시간 후, 수백명의 조류 사육사를 만날 수 있는 샹치우에 도착했습니다.
중국에서는 사육할 수 있는 조류 종의 수는 제한되어 있으나 시,군 또는 도에 따라 다르다고 합니다. 가장 일반적인 조류 종은 코뉴어, 왕관앵무, 퀘이커(몽크 앵무새) 입니다. 우리 일행은 퀘이커와 코뉴어를 전문으로 하는 몇몇의 사육장을 방문했습니다. 운 좋게도 아프리칸 회색 앵무, 그린-윙드 마카우, 청금강 마카우, 그리고 소수의 인디안 링넥 단순변이종도 볼 수 있었습니다.
8월 16일 토요일 아침, 우리 일행은 샹치우에 있는 버셀레-라가(VERSELE-LAGA) 전시매장을 방문했습니다.
점심 이후에, 조류 번식 및 관리에 대한 강의를 진행 하였습니다. 강의는 영어로 진행되었으나 중국어로도 강의 내용 전체를 번역하였습니다. 강의에 대한 참석자들의 관심은 매우 높았습니다. 120명 이상의 참석자로 구성된 그룹은 주로 현지 사육사들로 이루어져 있었지만, 강의에 참석하기 위해 몇 시간 동안을 여행한 사육자들도 있었습니다. 강의 후에는 인공 사육과 누트리버드(NutriBird)의 올바른 준비 방법에 대한 많은 질문들이 이어졌습니다. 모든 참석자들에게 버셀레-라가의 로로 파크(Loro Parque) 혼합알곡을 포함한 선물 가방과 참석 인증서가 증정되었습니다.
일요일에 우리 일행은 강소성의 수도인 난징으로 갔습니다. 오후에 그곳 현지의 새 시장을 방문했습니다.
여기서 우리는 대량의 잉꼬, 왕관 앵무새, 그리고 퀘이커와 코뉴어를 보았습니다. 어느 한 가게에서는 검은 머리 카이큐 분양을 하고 있었습니다!
홍산산림동물원
8월 18일 월요일에는 귀여운 판다를 관람할 수 있는 중국 최대 동물원인 홍산산림동물원 방문이 예정되어 있었습니다. 홍산산림동물원은 하루 평균 2만 명의 방문객이 찾는 곳으로, 이는 연간 700만 명 이상의 방문객에 해당되는 숫자입니다. 방문한 날의 기온(40°C)이 매우 높았음에도 불구하고 긴 줄의 많은 방문객들을 볼 수 있었습니다.
아침에 새 공원 내부의 비공개 구역을 관람했습니다. 앵무새 구역은 리모델링 중이어서 댜양한 앵무새를 관람할 수 없었지만 마카우, 이클렉터스 그리고 코카투등을 볼 수 있었고 또한 그레트 혼빌과 아름다운 홍따오기, 꿩, 올빼미등도 관람 할 수 있었습니다. 그날 오후에는 동물원 직원들과 몇몇 현지 사육사들을 위한 강의를 했습니다.
저녁에 우리 일행은 고속열차를 타고 상하이로 돌아왔습니다. 이후 3일간 상하이 신국제엑스포센터에서 열린 아시아 펫 페어에 참석했습니다. 2,500개 이상의 다양한 전시업체와 50만 명 이상의 방문객이 참석한 이 박람회는 아시아 최대 규모의 펫 박람회입니다.
아시아 펫 페어
올해는 새 사료와 영양제를 전문으로 취급하는 수입업체 및 도매업체로 행사장 전체가 예약되었습니다. 처음으로 새 전시회도 열렸으며, 주로 퀘이커가 전시되었습니다. 중국 정부의 조류 사육에 관한 정책은 확실히 앵무새와 패러킷에 대한 관심 증가에 기여했습니다.
지난주 동안 받은 수많은 질문을 통해 새에 대한 관심이 더욱 확인되었습니다. 특히 버셀레-라가(VERSELE-LAGA) 수입업체들이 주최한 라이브 스트리밍에서는 새 사육에 관심 있는 젊은이들의 질문이 특히 많았습니다. 모든 질문에 답변할 시간이 부족했기에, 다음에 꼭 다시 방문을 할 것입니다.
2025 China bird breeders tour & Pet Fair
Friday, August 15, is also an official holiday in Korea (Independence Day). Due to the long weekend, it was already very busy early in the morning at Incheon Airport, from where our flight to Shanghai departed. In Shanghai, we were met by our friends from Versele-Laga Shanghai.
Together we took the subway to Shanghai’s gigantic train station. After enjoying a delicious beef soup, we took a high-speed train to the east of Henan province. Almost three hours later, we arrived in Shangqiu, home to hundreds of bird breeders.
The number of bird species is limited and depends on the district or province. The most common birds are conures, cockatiels, and quaker parrots (monk parrots). We visited several facilities which specialized in monk parakeets and conures.
We were also lucky enough to see some African grey parrots, green-winged macaws, blue-and-yellow macaws, and some basic mutations of the Indian ring-necked parakeet.
On Saturday August 16 in the morning we visited the flagship store of VERSELE-LAGA in Shangqiu.
After lunch we gave a lecture about bird breeding and management. The lecture was given in English and was fully translated into Chinese. There was a lot of interest in this lecture. The group of more than 120 participants consisted mainly of local breeders, but there were also breeders who had traveled for hours to attend. After the lecture, there were many questions about hand-rearing and the correct preparation method for NutriBird. All attendees also received a certificate of participation and a goodie bag containing, among other things, a Loro Parque seed mix from Versele-Laga.
Hongshan Forest Zoo
On Sunday we left for Nanjin, the capital city of Jiangsu province. In the afternoon we visited the local bird market.
Here we saw lots of budgies, cockatiels, quakers and conures. One store also offered black headed caiques !
On Monday, August 18, we were expected in Nangjin at Hongshan Forest Zoo, China’s largest zoo and home to some beautiful pandas. Hongshan Forest Zoo receives an average of 20,000 visitors per day, which amounts to more than 7 million visitors per year. Despite the very high temperatures (40 °C), there were long lines of visitors waiting.
In the morning, we were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the bird park. The parrot section was being renovated, so we didn’t see many parrots, except for a few macaws, noble parrots, and cockatoos. We also got to see the great hornbill, as well as beautiful red ibises, pheasants, owls, etc. In the afternoon, we gave another lecture, which was mainly attended by zoo staff and a few local breeders.
Pet Fair Asia
In the evening we took the high-speed train back to Shanghai. For the next 3 days we attended the Pet Fair Asia at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. With over 2,500 different exhibitors and more than half a million visitors, this is the largest pet fair in Asia. This year, an entire hall was reserved for importers and wholesale businesses specializing in bird feed and supplements. For the first time, a bird show was also organized. Mainly monk parakeets were exhibited here. The Chinese government’s policy regarding keepings birds has definitely contributed to a growing interest in parrots and parakeets.
The interest in birds was further confirmed by the many questions we received over the past week. Especially during the livestream organized by various importers of Versele-Laga we had many questions from young people interested in keeping birds. Given that there was not enough time to answer everyone’s questions, we will definitely be back.
